Not illustrated. 1854 Excerpt: ... pale yellow marked with red; the petaline segments marked longitudinally down the centre with two of yellow; and all the segments densely bearded with a bunch of wool at the end. The spots at the base of each segment are of a vivid blue. When in bloom the flowers have a faint agreeable scent. The ovary is of considerable length, acutely threeangled, ribbed up the centre of each valve, and clothed with short wool; the stigma sessile, large, three-lobed, the lobes very large and spreading, densely covered with thick hairs on all sides, beautifully crested, and reflexed, the margins also reflexed. The figure was taken from the collection in the Chelsea Botanic Garden; where this was detected amongst a number of other Tulips, the roots of which had been sent to the Society of Apothecaries, of London, from abroad, as Colchicums, but which on being planted proved to be species of Tulip. It is a native of the South of Europe. It is a very ornamental plant, easily cultivated, requiring a warm dry soil, and is propagated by dividing the offsets, .when quiescent, in the usual way. The generic name is explained under t. 175. TULIPA, Linn u-.--Perianth six-leaved, bell-sbaped, petaloid, deciduous, the leaflets connivent, nearly equal, not nectariferous. Stamens six hypogynous. Ovary three-celled; ovules numerous in each cell, in two rows, anatropous; style none; stigma sessile, terminal, three-lobed, the lobes spreading, complicate. Capsule three-sided, three-celled, loculicidally three-valved. T. turcica; scape glabrous; leaves narrow lanceolate acute channelled, powdery-glaucous, the margin incurved; perianth erect, the divisions lanceolate acuminate, bearded at the base, the petaline ones larger; filaments villous at the base. ...
