They used to play in the stream of water escaping through the undersluice shutters at either end of the anicut, and evidently were anxiously looking for these shutters to be opened to make their way up the river. Fishermen standing over the under-sluiees used to catch them in numbers with casting nets; five and six, and sometimes more, at a throw. Unless these under sluices were opened periodically for a certain time, I do not see how otherwise the passage of the fish up water can be provided for in the low-water season.) VI. It would be possible to forbid fishing during the spawning season, . i. e., August, September, and October, and the prohibition enn bo enforced, but in effect this would almost annihilate it. VII. Before the construction of tho anicut, there was none of this fishing in the vicinity of that spot, or in tho river generally; but it has become a trade since thon. The fishermen say that they do not catch the Sablo in such abundance now as they lined to do immediately after the anicut was built. The period of the fishery at tho anicut lasts during tho months of August, September, and October, and in all these months tho fish are caught with roc in them. Therefore to interdict fishing during theso months because the fish are thus caught, would simply annihilate the trade, unless the people were allowed to use their nets on certain days in each week only. This would give the fish, a holiday; and when the water tops tho anicut considerably so as to reduce the difference of level between the water above and below it, no doubt the fish can run up.
