Not illustrated. 1819 Excerpt: ...as being worse than they really were, and Sheffield lay for some time under the most vehement suspicions of being infected with principles decidedly revolutionary. But on the other hand, those who approved of the principles and views on which we had entered into the war with France, were eager in adopting every means by which they could manifest their approbation of the measure. A state of painful disunion was the consequence. Suspicion, distrust, and hatred took place for a time of that friendly and unanimous spirit, and that absence of bigotry, religious or political, which in better times had honourably distinguished the inhabitants of Sheffield. Accidental circumstances contributed to inflame political jealousies; and on one melancholy occasion a volunteer corps, which had been raised in the town, were drawn out in the streets, when two of their townsmen were killed by a discharge of musketry. This volunteer corps of infantry was formed in the month of April 1794. It consisted of 490 men, who were reduced to 351 in 1802, when it was disbanded. The late right honourable the earl of Effingham was the colonel. Many of the gentlemen of Sheffield and its neighbourhood joined the regiment of cavalry which was raised at the same period in the southern parts of the west-riding. On the renewal of the war in 1803, and the alarm of an invasion, a much more numerous body of men offered their services as a volunteer corps of infantry, and were accepted; The questions of domestic politics were at this period lost sight of in an apprehension of common danger, and persons of all parties rallied round the throne.
