Prophylaxis: destroy the insect in every case. Protection of the individual: destruction of the young insects. It has been shown that an individual can be exposed to any climate without bad effects provided he is protected from the insect. Protection with screens on doors, windows and beds is required. Method of killing the insects: vessels containing kerosene, chlorine gas, tobacco smoke or formalin; a salve containing eucalyptus will protect from infection from germs. Danger of working out of doors not so great if removed from vicinity of dwellings. Kerosene will kill larvae on any pool. Spread on the kerosene every two hours. Best method is drainage. Do away with all undergrowth around dwellings. Practical means: 1, drainage; 2, protection of doors and windows by screens; 3, protection of the individual by screens; 4, thorough treatment of every case of malaria. Treatment: two doses of 15 grains of quinia on successive days for several weeks. States should see that quinin is within easy reach of their citizens. This principle of prophylaxis has been practically carried out by Koch on the west coast of Africa. The cases were treated and the mosquitoes were denied the privilege of biting the patients. No destruction of the insects. That section is now practically free of malaria. So, treat the cases, educate the public for self-protection, distribute quinin. Dr. Ym.
