Treatment of Affections of the Nose and Naso-Pharynx by the Application of Hot Air. Lermoyez and Mahu, before the laryngological section of the Thirteenth International Medical Congress (Rev. hebdom. de laryngologie, d'otologie et de rhinologie, vol. 21, no. 36) report upon the results obtained by them in treating affections of the nose and naso-pharynx with hot air. "With the aid of a special apparatus they throw into the nasal fossse a current of dry air heated to a temperature of 80 to 100 Centigrade. These applications are made under control of the eye; each seance lasting two minutes, and is repeated two or three times a week. Eight to a dozen seances are necessary to obtain a result. Under the influence of the current of hot air there is produced an intense retraction of the mucous membrane, followed shortly by an abundant watery secretion which ceases at the end of a few minutes. Amelioration is soon manifested. This treatment has given these authors the best results in cases of chronic congestive coryza, with intermittent nasal obstruction. It causes rapid disappearance of sneezing and the other nervous symptoms of spasmodic coryza, likewise the discharge in hydrorrhea, and modifies the condition of the mucous membrane. It seems to relieve the crises of hay fever and gives good results in auricular troubles, deafness and buzzing due to catarrh of the nose and naso-pharynx, while it gives immediate relief in otalgia. In ozena, purulent catarrh, lupus, hypertrophic rhinitis, and in affections of the nose and naso-pharynx amenable to surgical treatment, it is without results. Toxic Paralyses of the Larynx.
