Sulphocarbolate was changed to soda on the 21st of August, and the quantity cut to 40 grains per day. Viola H., sister of other case, age 20, was teaching, came home sick on evening of September 5th; saw her next morning about 10. History: a chill at noon on the 5th, intense headache and backache; had vomited all night; bowels had not moved in forty-eight hours; stomach extremely teuder; gurgling and slight tenderness in right iliac fossa; temperature 104.5; tongue covered with dirty brown fur and dry; delirious for past twenty-four hours. Gave her calomel onetenth grain thirty tablets, directed one tablet every half-hour till bowels moved freely. No food for next twenty-four hours, plenty of cold water--all she would drink. Sept. 7. Bowels moved at 4 A.m., and three times in next two hours. Tongue moist but still coated, temperature 102.5; patient rational; complains of pain in both sides; liver slightly enlarged and tender; spleen about two inches below ribs, and very tender. Gave her milk diet, one-third limewater to dilute, and soda sulphocarbolate five grains every three hours. Sept. 8. Condition about the same as yesterday. Changed from soda to zinc on account of bowels moving too freely. Sept. 9. Fever 102, skin moist, tongue has bright red stripe in center. Gave in addition silver nitrate one-fourth grain three times a day. Fearing hemorrhage from ulceration, continued the zinc. Sept. 10. Fever 102; 80 to 100 rosespots on the abdomen and chest; extreme tenderness in the right iliac fossa; other symptoms unchanged; continued zinc and silver. Sept. 11.
