YOUNG. The great educational excursion, which was arranged for by the Managers of the National Teachers' Association and American Institute of Instruction, with those of the Chicago and Port Sarnia Line of Steamers, and of the Grand Trunk Railway from Chicago to Boston, via Ogdensburg, Montreal and Portland, has been, in its course and extent, one of the grandest and most interesting, especially to Western teachers, that could have been planned in this country. Starting from Chicago we had a delightful voyage of over three days to Port Sarnia, touching at the Great Manitou and Mackinac, and from Sarnia a comfortable railroad journey through southern Canada, along the lake shore to Ogdensburg, a beautiful little city on the banks of the noble St. Lawrence, where we met near three hundred teachers and school officers, representing nearly every State in the Union, including Louisiana. The Association assembled at 10 o'clock, A. M., on the 10th (of August), and was welcomed in an address of hearty cordiality by one of the most prominent citizens of the place, and by the Ogdensburg Musical Association in an original song of welcome, our verse of which was as follows; "We welcome you hero from the distant West, From mountain, from prairie, and lake; St. Lawrence was nurtured on Michigan's breast, We welcome you here for her sake." And New England's portion was this: "Wo welcome you, too, from New England, with joy, Sea-guarded, rock-crested, and old; Though envy the weapons of strife should employ, We'll not leave you out in the cold!"
