CHAPTER XXVII MINING Iron--Very little mining was done in Indiana until recently. Considerable time was spent in early days, even while Indiana was a territory, hunting gold and silver along the edges of the glacial drift. Most of this was done in Brown and Fountain counties. Some fabulous reports of gold mines in these counties got into the eastern papers and caused a great deal of excitement. A number of salt wells were opened and at least in a score of places iron was found and mined in small quantities. There was great hope from 1870 to 1875 that the Indiana iron mines would equal those "of Pennsylvania. Geological Surveys--The mining in Indiana has followed pretty closely the directions of the state geologists. As early as 1835 the Assembly believed there were valuable minerals in the hilly part of the state. This belief was due directly to the work of William McClure of Philadelphia, who for many years was associated with the Owens in science work at New Harmony. During the years 1837 and 1838 David Dale Owen made a careful geological survey of the state. He found iron in numerous places though not in sufficient quantities to pay. He estimated that the state had 7,740 square miles of valuable coal, but as the state was almost covered with forest and there was no manufacturing this was of little value. Nearly every county promised good stone for lime and cement, and in Perry and Harrison counties was good sandstone for building. By 1838 the state was almost bankrupt and nothing further was done till 1854. In that year the state board of agriculture employed Dr. R. T. Brown to continue the work, with especial attention to the soil which in many places showed signs of giving out. Dr. Brown first called attention to the Oolitic limestone, but thought little use could be made of it...
