In this age of light philosophers maintain that man was made in the image of a monkey, and retains it with the addition of "all the modern improvements"; from which it follows that, if a man lives a monkey's life and dies a monkey's death, he rounds the circle of his destiny. In the Dark Ages giants of thought and study built works of intellectual power as strong as the cathedrals, and yet more enduring; for when the cathedrals shall have become shapeless ruins, countless thousands will continue to be nerved and exalted by the grand thoughts of those majestic masters of the soul, yet humble servants of God, whose words will never die. It was reserved for an age of light to hang on the lips of a jester with a thousand times more enthusiastic delight than it would on the lips of the Archangel Raphael. The Dark Ages, as we insolently call them, were ages of furious storms in Church and State. At times it seemed as though chaos would come again; yet, generally, the questions which led to such terrific convulsions were great questions.
