Though their political views were at variance, their friendship formed at this time remained uninterrupted throughout their lives. Mr. Dayton was admitted to the bar in 1830 as attorney, and as counsellor in 1833. He chose to enter upon practice in Freehold, Monmouth county, and continued to reside there till he was made judge. He very soon won a place in the front rank of his profession. Early in his career a lucky chance, being in his case "taken at the flood, led on to fortune." He was retained to defend a well-known citizen who was indicted for assault and battery. Fearing that he could not bring about an acquittal upon the merits of the case, he looked for some technical point, and discovering that the grand jury had not been duly summoned and returned, he moved to quash the indictment, and after a short argument succeeded, the result being that all the indictments returned during the.term were declared illegal. This brought much commendation for his. shrewdness, and so much publicity that clients flockfed:: to. hj1n-ami his practice grew very large. Political honors also came to-ibim, . and., as he was an ambitious man with powers thoroujfftlyfitting him for public life, be threw himself with enthusiasm into'its activities. It became early evident to thoughtful men that in the field of politics Mr. Dayton's abilities found their proper outlet. His career in this sphere now became one of unexampled activity and conspicuous success. His patriotism was broad and deep, and his whole character was ruled by high resolves and noble aims.
