"No, no, Pierre!" cried Jack, suddenly finding his voice, and stretching out his hands towards the old man; "don't say, 'Bad luck to me for having known you, Monsieur Jacques." I'll never tease you again--never. And you're going to have a new boat; papa is going to give you a beautiful boat. Come on, Pierre, come on." On hearing this Pierre made a few steps forward slowly, and muttering to himself like one doubting what he heard. Then Jack ran forward, and laid hold of his tattered clothes. "They said you were drowned, but I did not believe them. I knew you would come back, and I'll never tease you again--never. There's wine in your cottage, Pierre, and your pipe is ready." "Ah, Monsieur Jacques, Monsieur Jacques, you look truthful, and as if you were glad to see me; but I know you broke your word, and brought evil to me," said Pierre sadly. "But I'll never break my word again," answered Jack. "I give you my word of honour as a gentleman, Pierre, I'll never tease you again. I have thought of you day and night since you went. Lean on me, and I'll lead you in." Then Pierre laid his hand on Jack's shoulder, who led him home. "I ought not to have gone on that day. I knew harm would come of it, and it was nearly death I met, Monsieur Jacques, out on the sea. That night I did not think I would ever see my cottage again." "But here you are in it," cried Jack, flinging open the door. When Pierre saw it all so tidy and comfortable, and the wine on the table, and his pipe prepared, just as if he had never left home, he sat down heavily in his chair and looked about him, not able to say a word for joy....
