Not illustrated. 1875 Excerpt: ...against liquor dealers during the time he was District Attorney of this county; how much, too, that model reformer received for services rendered the old Ring in the Broadway opening, and in various other little matters, during the administration of Richard B. Connolly; and, finally, to enlighten the public as to the amounts paid this same Waterbury for lobbying at Albany and procuring unprofitable legislation for this city. If his Honor has no taste for the work, I promise him that I will attend to it for him at the 320 earliest practicable moment, and shall, I think, satisfy him before 1 have done with that gentleman, that he has made a sad mistake in selecting as his henchman one so vulnerable in his official antecedents as the unsainted Waterbury. But neither I nor the public can be astonished at the Mayor's choice in this instance, in view of the many other unfortunate selections which have been.made by his Honor. Unceasing blunders, and intrepid, .cumulative folly have characterized his whole administration. In conclusion, permit me to say (though it is hardly necessary) that the Mayor's alleged discoveries in relation to myself are the weak, but malicious, offshoots of his 321 Honor's vindictiveness, on account of the part taken by myself, with others, in bringing to justice his esteemed friends--the forcibly retired Police Commissioners. He perhaps, thinks that the budget of calumny which he has been preparing with such rancorous hate, may have a tendency to injure me in public estimation, before an opportunity can be had to expose the malevolence of its author, and the turpitude and falsehood of its allegations.
