When, after Rhoda's recovery from her long illness, she and Annie came to school together, it excited the surprise of the whole body of girls, to see that the two half-sisters seemed amicably disposed towards each other. In schoolhours they sat side by side; in play-time they were generally not far apart; and none of the girls ever saw between them those heart-burnings and jealousies which were expected to create such amusement. Those of the school who delighted to fan a quarrel, and enjoyed an atmosphere of strife, (as some people still do, both old and young, living, like salamanders, in the midst of fire, --if my little friends know the story of that very fabulous animal, ) found themselves completely at fault. A few of these tried to sneer a little at Rhoda; but she did not mind that. It might have been otherwise had these warring spirits, who always trouble the peace of a school, still possessed a head; but the grand origin of all, "Jane the Giantess," had departed. It must be confessed, that Rhoda felt considerable relief when she saw Jane's corner vacant; for of all things the laugh of ridicule is most difficult to be borne. A great change had passed over Rhoda's character, during the weeks she had lain sick on her bed, deprived of all the enjoyments most natural to a girl of her high spirit and robust health. She had had time to think. Now Rhoda was never very fond of thinking; she generally acted on the impulse of the moment, whether good or ill. But during the long lonely hours, which, kind as every one was to her, were unavoidable, when Annie was at school, and all the rest at work or at play, Rhoda had time to think of many things which had never entered her mind before.
