Excerpt: ... The operator then catches hold of the foreskin and cuts it off, using the usual remedies to stop the bleeding. Different ways of disposing of the foreskin are practised in the different districts where the custom prevails. I have heard of its being eaten by the operator (always a distant relative) or by the brother-in-law of the novice, buried in the sand, burnt, or placed underneath the bark of a tree. After the ceremony the boy is taken away to a camp in the bush till his wounds are healed, and during this time he must neither look at, nor be seen by, any woman; it is death to the woman, who will be instantly killed by one of the boy's "guardians." On the boy's return to the camp of his people, he mingles with the other initiated men. The rite of subincision, which has also been called " Sturt's terrible rite," and " the mika operation," is a most cruel and painful one. and it is amongst the natives practising this rite that a corresponding operation has to be performed on the women. On the De Grey River circumcision does not, as a rule, precede subincision, but further east the two rites are practised. On the De Grey the rite is performed as follows: --The young man who is to lie operated upon is laid flat on his back on top of three young men lying face downwards (as in circumcision). One man sits on the candidate's chest, with his face turned towards the candidate's feet. Two more hold arms and legs. The man seated on his chest assists the operator by taking hold of the penis in his fingers and stretching it full length upwards along the abdomen. He uses both hands in catching the glans, and holds it in such a position as fully exposes the meatus and urethral canal.
