G., being under the impression that a certain packet contained Rochelle salts, told his daughter, aet. about 9 years, to mix the contents with some water and cream of tartar. The girl was long in mixing it, remarking that it did not dissolve well. The man grew impatient and asked her to hand it to him. After stirring it freely himself and adding a little more water he swallowed the lot--except the dregs which he threw out--remarking at the same time, that the taste was certainly different from usual. Within 3 minutes he experienced a severe burning pain in the stomach and gullet, but he did not yet suspect he had been poisoned, conceiving that the salts had simply lost their savour through being too long in the house. He went and lay. down on the bed with his face downwards. Here his girl heard him groaning in pain, and he was sensible of a brownish tough foam as it were boiling up into his mouth and finding its way on to the counterpane. In about an hour's time his wife, who had been out returned, and found him rapidly becoming unconscious and with great difficulty able to speak to her. As soon as she was able to comprehend what had taken place she went and obtained an emetic, which, from description, I believe to have been ipecacuanha. This induced vomiting, but it was decided that he should have another powder of the same, whereupon he vomited again and was purged freely.
