The men of Cheshire and Lancashire responded with alacrity and spirit to the appeal; raised the cry of Stanley, and poured their deadly arrows thick and fast into the dense ranks of the enemy. The most tempered mail proved a poor defence against the keen, long shafts, yet the Scots, although so fiercely attacked from an unexpected quarter, sustained the storm with great hardihood. The column so furiously attacked consisted of 10,000 men, commanded by Lord Borthwick, Bargeny, and Forbes. Stanley, marking the firmness of the enemy, urged his troops to close in, when the Scots' ranks were penetrated, and a tremendous and bloody conflict at close quarters ensued. Argyle, Lennox, Forbes, Bargeny, and Borthwick were stretched lifeless on the field, but Huntley escaped by the swiftness of his steed. Sorely dismayed by the fall of the leaders, the remnant of the column fled, hotly pursued by Stanley, who drew up his forces on perceiving the great main column of the Scots fighting furiously around King James and his standard. There were gathered the flower of the Scottish chivalry, the bravest of the brave. Both parties resorted to the bow before closing, the Scots suffering severely in the trial of skill. James was wounded by an arrow, which struck him on the forehead, causing great effusion of blood, which obscured his vision. He, however, with unabated spirit encouraged his soldiers to maintain the fight until his voice failed, as death came to him on that forlorn and sanguinary field of Flodden, by the hand of Stanley, it was thought. Although many captains went down, and standard and standard-bearer disappeared, the fight held fiercely on.
