The most remarkable and creditable figure in that singular drama, the Northern Rising, was Sir George Bowes, who exhibited conspicuous ability and energy. Leaving his own house he threw himself into Barnard Castle, where, with a handful of men, he was able during eleven days to hold the rebels at bay until the Earls of Sussex and Warwick collected and advanced against them with a sufficient force. But for this prompt action the pages of English history might have been greatly altered. For all that Sir George Bowes never received the reward to which he was entitled. On the contrary when he returned to his castle at Streatlam he found it despoiled, his charters burned, and his lands ravaged by the rebels, while subsequently his remaining property was greatly encumbered by the expenses he had incurred in performing his duty as provost-marshal. He petitioned his sovereign twenty times for compensation but in vain. A century later Mary Blakiston, the daughter and heiress of Sir William Blakiston, brought Gibside by marriage to aidescendant, Sir William Bowes, and her grand-daughter, Mary Eleanor, sole heiress of the united families of Bowes and Blakiston, married in 1767, john Lyon, the ninth Earl of Strathmore, who added to his own the name of Bowes. She survived her husband, and lived to regret marrying an adventurer named Andrew Robinson Stoney, who also took her name and afterwards sat in Parliament.
