His very coolness in the face of danger put Tom's fears at rest, and the weary courier was speedily in bed and fast asleep, like the tired, healthy boy he was. But his dreams grew troubled. He thought he was in danger. He was wrestling with Mr. Secretary Graham on the edge of a precipice. They tugged and pushed and neither one prevailed. Then Tom thought that the colonel stood beside him. He cast an appealing look towards his commander, and the colonel, it seemed, put out a hand to save him. But, even as he did so, Tom thought, he thrust out a foot as well, and Tom felt himself pushed back. His hold was broken. He felt himself reeling, falling; he threw out an arm to clutch at a tree and save himself, and, as he did so, he awoke with a start. He had some one by the arm. "Who is it?" he cried, thinking at once of his letter and his promise. The arm within his grasp gave no sign of resistance or withdrawal; a quiet voice replied, "It is I, Tom--Colonel Burr. I feared you would not sleep from worry, and so came in to make sure of you. Are you all right?" "All right, sir, thank you," Tom replied. "I had a bad dream, that's all." "Then pleasant ones to you now, Tom. Good night again." And the colonel stole softly from the room. "What a man he is," thought admiring Tom.
