Excerpt: ... ROSMINI AS A CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHER. Few men will figure more conspicuously in the ecclesiastical history of the nineteenth century than Antonio Rosmini. As a founder of a Religious Order, a profound Christian Philosopher of decidedly original genius, and a distinguished public man, his career is inseparably associated with the pontificate of Gregory XVI., and with the early history of Pius IX. It is not my intention within the limits of this paper to say anything of the holy life of this remarkable priest and religious. For on this subject I could add nothing to what has been already so ably and faithfully described by Father Lockhart in his "Life of Rosmini." Indeed, the main scope of his work has been to present Rosmini to the English Catholic public as a holy man, although of course, as an historian, the author has followed also the career through life of a religious, a philosopher, and a public man. Still, it has been Father Lockhart's chief aim and endeavour to describe the man rather than his doctrines and surroundings, and to make his readers recognize and feel that Rosmini was a holy man. Moreover Rosmini's sanctity has never been called in question, although he has had many opponents of his doctrines. As regards the latter, "the Life" has no doubt done a great deal to stimulate a long-felt desire to know something definite of Rosmini's philosophy as a whole. For up to the present but very meagre and oftentimes conflicting accounts have appeared in our Catholic periodicals on this subject. With a view, therefore, to satisfy, at least in part, this very natural desire, I purpose giving in the following pages a brief exposition of Romini's philosophy as a system.
